Join our Fleet & Depot Operations team and put your heavy vehicle expertise to work.
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Leading Hand Specialist Fitter to join our team at the John Street Fleet and Depot Operations Branch.
This is an opportunity for a skilled heavy vehicle mechanic to take on a key hands-on leadership role, supporting the Supervisor and helping ensure Council’s diesel plant, machinery and fleet remain safe, reliable and operational.
As Leading Hand Specialist Fitter, you will combine your technical expertise with your ability to coordinate and support a busy workshop team.
You will assist the Supervisor with the day-to-day allocation of work, provide technical guidance to workshop staff and apprentices, and undertake servicing, preventative maintenance, fault finding and repairs across a diverse range of Council plant and machinery.
When the Supervisor is off site, you will assume delegated supervisory responsibilities, helping maintain safe work practices, effective workflow and continuity of operations.
Coordinate daily workshop activities, allocate tasks and provide technical direction to workshop staff and apprentices.
Diagnose faults and undertake servicing, repairs and preventative maintenance on diesel plant, earthmoving equipment and road transport equipment.
Diagnose and maintain hydraulic and automotive electrical systems.
Use machine management and computer systems to support effective fault diagnosis and maintenance activities.
Promote and maintain high standards of workplace health and safety.
Maintain accurate maintenance records and the wheel re-tension register.
Ensure work is completed in accordance with Council policies, procedures and required standards.
Support continuous improvement across Fleet and Depot Operations.
Provide day-to-day leadership and assume delegated supervisory responsibilities when required.
You are an experienced heavy vehicle or plant mechanic who enjoys solving technical problems, sharing your knowledge and helping a team achieve quality outcomes.
You will bring:
Post-trade experience servicing, repairing and maintaining a range of plant, earthmoving and road transport equipment.
Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills in both workshop and field environments.
Proven experience with machinery hydraulic systems.
The ability to diagnose automotive electrical systems.
Experience using machine management software and computer-based maintenance systems.
The ability to lead, coach and mentor workshop staff and apprentices.
Strong organisational and communication skills.
The ability to step into delegated supervisory responsibilities when required.
A strong commitment to safe work practices, quality and continuous improvement.
You must hold and maintain:
AUR31120 Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology, or an equivalent recognised qualification. Other relevant Automotive Certificate III qualifications may be considered depending on demonstrated experience, competency and ability to meet the technical requirements of the role.
Queensland Heavy Vehicle Drivers Licence – Class HR or above.
Queensland General Construction Induction Card (White/Blue Card).
Queensland High Risk Work Licence – FL (Forklift Truck).
The following will be highly regarded:
Relevant plant tickets.
AAC002 Automotive Air Conditioning / Refrigerant Handling Licence.
Queensland High Risk Work Licence – DG (Dogging).
Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads Approved Examiner Accreditation.
